Koberger vs Cambric: Formatting Tool or Writing and Formatting App?
Koberger and Cambric compared honestly: a browser-based formatter against a desktop app for writing and formatting. Prices, platforms, trial, exports and who each one suits.
Cambric is a desktop app that does two jobs: it's somewhere to write your book and somewhere to format it. Koberger only does the second. That's the real difference between them, and it'll probably decide which one suits you.
I make Koberger, so bear that in mind. Every Cambric fact here comes from its own website, checked on 29 September 2026.
The short version
Choose Cambric if you want to write and format in one desktop app, keep your files on your own computer, and pay once.
Choose Koberger if you already write somewhere you like, want to work in a browser on any computer, or want to try the whole thing free before paying.

Where Cambric is stronger
Writing and formatting in one place. If you'd like to draft, organise and format without moving between apps, Cambric does all three. Its binder handles parts, chapters, front matter and back matter as you write.
Your files stay on your computer. Cambric is local-first: your projects live on your machine and it works offline, with no account needed.
Pay once. $199 and you're done, at least until a new major version. No subscription.
Where Koberger is stronger
Try it all before you pay. Koberger is free to use until you export, so you can import your manuscript, design the whole book and read every page first. Cambric asks for $199 upfront and relies on a refund window instead.
Any computer, nothing to install. Koberger runs in your browser, so it works on a Chromebook or Linux as well as Windows and Mac, and your books follow you from computer to computer.
Keeps your writing tool. If you're happy writing in Word, Scrivener or Google Docs, Koberger doesn't ask you to move. You bring the finished manuscript in and format it.
Built for several books. Reuse your author bio and Also By page across every book, keep a series consistent, share private preview links with readers, and export a Word file for editors and narrators.
Checked EPUBs. Every Koberger EPUB is run through EPUBCheck, the validator the stores use, before you can download it.
The cost, worked out
Cambric's $199 is about three and a third years of Koberger's annual plan ($59.94), or roughly twenty months of the monthly plan. If you'll format regularly for years and like the idea of writing in the same app, Cambric's one-time price makes sense. If you're formatting one or two books, Koberger will usually cost less, and you'll have seen your finished book before paying anything.
My honest take
This one's mostly about how you like to work. If you want one app for writing and formatting, on your own computer, Cambric is built for that. If you'd rather keep writing where you already write and format in a browser, Koberger is the better fit.
